Start your garden while giving to a great cause! This annual fundraiser features donations of over 12 local nurseries and many individuals. Native plants, shrubs, trees and tickets the Backyard Habitat Tour will be sold. Look for the Genesee Land Trust banner --- this event takes place rain or shine.

SECOND ANNUAL NATIVE TREE, SHRUB, WILDFLOWER AND WOODLAND PLANT SALE
Date: Saturday, June 7, 2008
Time: 9 AM – 1 PM

Location: Mendon Station Park, located in the Hamlet of Mendon at the corner of Pittsford-Mendon Rd. (Rt. 64) and Rush-Mendon Rd. (Rt.251) behind Cibi’s. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit the Mendon Foundation.
The Mendon Foundation is sponsoring a native plant including trees, shrubs, woodland and wildflower plants supplied by Jim Engel of White Oak Nursery, Ellen Folts of Amanda’s Garden and the Mendon Foundation. They will provide expert advice on plant selection and ways to attract songbirds and wildlife to your natural garden landscape.

The 12th Annual Herb & Flower Festival

This all day event is coordinated by Master Gardener volunteers and provides over 50 vendors with a place to advertise and sell their
products. In addition to merchandise, gardening related classes are scheduled throughout the day.

Collecting and Growing Seed of Native Trees, Shrubs and Forbs:
An Easy Way to Restore Native Vegetation

Growing native plants from seed is the most economical and efficient way to restore native plants on a large scale. In this class Jim Engel will cover general propagation of woody and herbaceous plants from seed, with special attention to native plants and plant communities and their use in restoring natural areas. Topics discussed will include how and when to collect seed of various native plants, seed treatments, storage and stratification techniques, planting methods, and strategies to improve germination and survival under natural conditions. Samples of seeds will be available for hands-on demonstration. Jim is owner of White Oak Nursery, a native tree and shrub nursery in Canandaigua, and an avid promoter of native plants and their uses in both natural and human landscapes.
